Things Kids Aren't Afraid To Do In Art Class (That usually parents are)

Updated: May 29

Kids are amazing teachers!

They can teach us so many things.

Have you ever watched your child bign creating?

They don't wat for someone else to tell them what to do.

They just start!

They are unafraid to take risks, make mistakes, get it wrong!

They try

They adapt

They share ideas

They use their imaginations

They PLAY

That is the environment we try to cultivate at our art play sessions. We alleviate any fears of making mistakes or doing it wrong because we encourage them to just do. Have a go, see what happens.

Because they are doing it for the love of it, not for anyone else but themselves.

Because that's what real artists do,

I've be reading the book "Beautiful Oops" by Barney Saltzburg to my children this week as we were so inspired by our friend at art play. This book is fantastic. It shows children (and adults!) how any mistake can be changed into something beautiful. We have a few perfectionists in our house and it has really helped them to understand that making mistakes are part of life and you can always do something special with them if you just use your imagination.

Here are some things you can do when you make a mistake on your artwork:

  1. Flip over the page and start again OR flip it upside down and see what you can make with what you've already done.

  2. Draw over what you've already done or stick a piece of collage paper over it and use that as a starting point instead.

  3. Erase your drawing and start again

  4. Add extra details to it

  5. Cut it out and stick the bits you like onto a new page and go from there

What do you do when you make a mistake? Do you find it easy to keep going? Sometimes trying again is the hardest thing in the world but often the most worthwhile.
