Updated: May 29

Here are our top 5 reasons why we need to make time for children to do art.

Children love to do art. They love the freedom and that they can choose how to express themselves with different materials and mediums. But how much time do they need?

It's hard to make time for something that society isn't always backing. Some people say without art the world would end while others claim that art is just f luff subject that children can do without. I don't know about you, but here at Bundabubs we absolutely believe that art should be as much a part of children's lives as counting or reading. here's why. These are our top 6 reasons why we need to make time for children to do art. A little everyday goes a really long way.

Art is so good for developing important life skills

Time for unstructured creative play is vital for children's development. It allows them to think for themselves, make decisions, adapt, and learn to concentrate and focus on one task at a time. Alongside this, art helps with essential development in language, fine and gross motor skills and co-ordination. It also prepares their hands for writing and their minds for problem solving.

Art supports children's mental health and well-being

When children feel safe and comfortable to express themselves freely they are at ease with themselves and everyone around them. Art relieves stress, eases their minds and allows them to work through emotions or big feelings at their own pace. Art can not only help to practise mindfulness but the calming nature of art means that there is more time for growth in other areas such as independence, language and fine or gross motor skills. When children's mental health is cared for they can exercise kindness, gratitude, problem solving and self reflection.

Great For Concentration

Mindfulness, being present in the moment, actively participating in a task, and making conscious choices occur while engaging in art. People usually want to start and finish their artwork during an art session which encourages them to concentrate and focus on the task at hand.

Communicating Ideas

Through scribbles, painting, use of a choice of materials, children express their perception of the world around them. They put ideas out into the world and see other perspectives as well. They learn to be open minded, non-judgemental and accepting of difference. They respond to diversity with respect because they learn to accept thsi in return.

Boosts Self Esteem

Engaging in art means you are trusting yourself to put something on paper that you believe to be art. No one can take away from you how you feel when you make something that you are proud of. Taking a risk or try something new, stepping out of your comfort zone is hard. But when there are is no righ or wrong way to do it, somehow it is easier to do.

By exercising choice while creating art, children develop aspects of self identity such as emerging automony, resilience, perseverence and a sense of agency.

This is why we do art classes. We value art play so much because it can boost self esteem, give children a sense of self and belonging, empowerment and lift up their mood. Why do you think children should do art?
